Have you tried Reverse Mentoring?

This edition provides ways to reflect on how you can tap into those younger than you to be a better leader.

THINK

❓ When is the last time you sat down for 10+ minutes and engaged in meaningful dialogue with someone that is more than 10 years younger than you?

❓ What did you learn and take away from that conversation?

🧐 How in touch are you with those 1-2 levels below you on the org chart?

🧐 What can you do to bring more ideas from the younger generations to the classroom, boardroom or meeting room?

💡 Remember, as a leader, things aren’t always as good as you think. You have to be intentional, dig deep and do things differently if you want different results.

PRACTICE

This week I was schooled by teens on how to be a better mom…and I LOVED every minute of it. I learned secrets to upleveling my parent game from listening to those that experienced middle school. They had insider intel that I didn’t know I needed.

I started thinking of how this can apply to the work world. Here are ways you can get started on the reverse mentoring train at the office. 🚂

  1. Smart Small

    → Who can you invite to coffee or lunch that’s at least 10 years younger than you? No agenda, just giving them time to talk while you’re in active listening mode. 👂🏽

  2. Make It A Habit

    → Start calendaring time to meet and listen. Can you do this 1-2x per month?

  3. Expand Your Reach

    → Recruit other leaders to meet with those younger with them. Better yet, plan an event to honor and pour into the younger generations…but MAKE SURE you invite them to join the planning committee. You must have their input.

Remember this doesn’t need to be complicated. A bit of intentionality, undivided attention and interest will go a long way. Start small and simple.

→ Stay curious. Here are a few questions you can use:

  • What are your passions outside of work?

  • Do you think we’re leveraging technology enough?

  • What can we do in the office to make work stations more comfortable?

  • If you were in my role, what would you do differently?

  • What are you learning this month (inside or outside of work)?
