Time Block like a Boss

This edition provides ways to reflect on how you are managing your time and practical strategies to time block like a boss. 😎 I recently presented a talk on Time Management at a Women’s Conference and thought I’d share with you.

THINK

📏 On a scale of 1-10, 10 being the best, how do you rate time management while on the job?

📏 On a scale of 1-10, 10 being the best, how do you rate your personal time?

❓Why did you give yourself these ratings?

🧐 Do you have ALL your commitments in one place (Google calendar, Outlook calendar, iCal, etc.)?

🧐 Is there margin built into your day and calendar?

Really reflect on margin. This is what sabotages our day. You must have space for when life happens and meetings run over.

PRACTICE

Remember YOU ARE IN CONTROL OF YOUR SCHEDULE. You won’t be able to fix things overnight, but with small intentional steps your future self with thank you!

Start by getting EVERYTHING onto one calendar.

Next, create time blocks.

  1. Personal | 👪

→ Add all important dates such as birthdays, anniversaries, events.

→ If you have children, note when school is closed or early dismissals. Don’t forget extracurriculars! ⚽ 🩰 🏈 🏀 🎶

  2. Professional | 💼

→ You probably already have all your meetings on the calendar, if not, make sure they are added.

→ What about offline work. Start creating recurring time blocks for the types of work you do.

  3. Build Your Ideal Day |

→ I call this calendar tetris ⬛️🟥⬛️🟥. How can you arrange your work best suited to your energy levels and seasons of life?

DO

Here’s my favorite tool to help keep the entire family in the loop with appointments and activities (and see your time blocks! 🔍).

→ The Skylight Calendar is a device I purchased about 1 year ago and love how even my 5 year old can stay engaged with chores and schedules. Here are the features I love:

  • Integrates schedules from Google, Microsoft, Apple & Yahoo

  • Sits or hangs in your home for everyone to see

  • Touch screen to check off chores

  • Meal plans can be added to the daily calendar

  • Updates happen via mobile app or the device
